Do Cats Know Their Own Names? What the Research Actually Shows

Do cats know their names? A team of Japanese researchers spent three years answering that question with speakers, stopwatches and 77 very unimpressed cats, and the answer turned out to be yes, with an asterisk the size of a scratching post. Cats can pick their own name out of a stream of similar sounding words. What they do about it is a separate matter entirely, and that gap between hearing and answering is the most interesting part of the whole story.

The research is real, published, and more careful than the headlines suggested. It also spawned a small cluster of follow up studies that pushed much further than anyone expected in 2019. Here is what the evidence actually supports.

What is inside

The Study That Answered the Question

In April 2019, Scientific Reports published a paper with a wonderfully blunt title: “Domestic cats (Felis catus) discriminate their names from other words.” The authors were Atsuko Saito, Kazutaka Shinozuka, Yuki Ito and Toshikazu Hasegawa, working out of the University of Tokyo, with Saito now at Sophia University. Four experiments, three years of data collection, 77 cats between six months and 17 years old, most of them indoor, most of them neutered, none of them cooperative by nature.

The habituation trick

You cannot ask a cat a question, so the team used a method borrowed from infant research called habituation-dishabituation. The logic is simple and slightly cruel in its elegance. Play an animal a sequence of similar stimuli and it gets bored, with each response smaller than the last. Then slip in something the animal considers different. If the response jumps back up, the animal noticed a difference. If nothing happens, it did not.

So the owner recorded five words. Four were ordinary nouns matched to the cat’s name for length and stress pattern, so the test could not be passed by rhythm alone. The fifth was the cat’s name. The recordings played from a speaker while the owner stayed out of sight, which removes the obvious confound of a human standing there radiating expectation.

What counts as a cat saying yes

Nobody expected the cats to trot over. The researchers scored much smaller signals: ear moving, head moving, tail moving, vocalisation and displacement of the whole body. The result was that cats reliably showed orienting behaviour, the ears swivelling and the head turning, when their own name arrived after four decoy nouns. The communicative behaviours, the tail flick and the meow, largely did not appear. A cat hears its name, rotates an ear, and continues doing nothing. That is the finding, stated honestly. Cats save their loud reactions for other occasions, such as chattering at birds through a window.

The ear thing is not a throwaway detail. Cat ears are precision instruments, with a hearing range running from roughly 48 Hz to 85 kHz according to Heffner and Heffner’s 1985 audiogram work, one of the widest of any mammal and far beyond the human ceiling near 20 kHz. Each ear can rotate independently. When a cat aims an ear at a speaker, it is doing something deliberate with a very expensive piece of equipment. Why the Cat Café Cats Blew It

The most revealing experiment involved cats living with four or more other cats, plus a group recruited from a cat café. The question was sharper: can a cat tell its own name from the name of a cat it lives with? Same species of sound, same voice, same room, different referent.

Household cats managed it. Café cats did not. The researchers’ explanation is tidy and a little sad. At home, a name gets used with consequences attached. Say “Mochi” and Mochi specifically gets fed, picked up, brushed or scolded. In a café, a visitor coos every cat’s name at every cat in the room, and the names stop predicting anything. The sound loses its address. The cats were not less clever, they were correctly parsing a world where the labels had been scrambled.

That single contrast does more work than the headline finding. It tells you the ability is learned from the statistics of daily life, not installed at birth. It also means the answer to “does my cat know its name” partly depends on how consistently you have been using it. Humans have been sharing rooms with cats for something like 10,000 years, from the temple colonies of ancient Egypt to a café in Osaka, and the cats have been quietly running the statistics the whole time.

Do Cats Know Their Names, or Just a Useful Noise?

This is where the study earns its credibility, because the authors said it themselves. Discriminating a sound is not the same as understanding a name. A cat that reacts to “Luna” might have learned that this particular acoustic pattern precedes food, a lap, a brush, or a trip to the vet. That is associative learning, not reference. Human names do something else: they point at a person, independently of whatever happens next.

The 2019 paper stopped short of claiming cats have that second thing, and it was right to. The evidence it produced is that cats can discriminate the content of human speech based on phonemic differences, which is a real cognitive claim and a modest one. Anyone who told you the study proved cats “understand” their names in the way a toddler does was doing marketing, not science.

Then the follow up work arrived and made the modest reading look too modest.

Cats Are Doing More With Voices Than Anyone Expected

Four studies, stacked in order, show a fairly steep escalation.

2013, the owner’s voice. Before the name work, Saito and Shinozuka published “Vocal recognition of owners by domestic cats” in Animal Cognition. Twenty cats heard three strangers call their name, then the owner. Fifteen habituated properly, and those cats dishabituated to the owner. Same orienting response, same absence of any communicative reply. Cats know your voice from a stranger’s. They just decline to comment.

2021, the teleporting human. Saho Takagi, Hitomi Chijiiwa, Minori Arahori, Atsuko Saito, Kazuo Fujita and Hika Kuroshima published a study in PLOS ONE in November 2021 that put two speakers at least four metres apart. A cat heard its owner calling from speaker one, then the sound jumped to speaker two, which is physically impossible for a human on foot. Across three experiments with 50, 45 and 47 cats, the strongest surprise response came from exactly that condition, the owner apparently teleporting. The conclusion is that cats hold a mental map of where their human is, updated by sound, and object when the map breaks.

2022, the names of other cats. Takagi, Saito and colleagues published “Cats learn the names of their friend cats in their daily lives” in Scientific Reports. A speaker played the recorded name of a cat the subject lived with, then a face appeared on a monitor. Sometimes the face matched the name, sometimes it did not. Cats looked longer at the mismatch. No training was involved, which is the point: the association had been picked up passively at home.

2024, word learning in eighteen seconds. Takagi, Hikari Koyasu, Miho Nagasawa and Takefumi Kikusui published “Rapid formation of picture-word association in cats” in Scientific Reports on 4 October 2024. Cats saw meaningless images paired with meaningless spoken sounds, then the pairings were swapped. With human speech, the cats looked significantly longer at the switched combinations, having habituated after roughly four trials of nine seconds each. Human infants in a comparable paradigm needed at least four trials of twenty seconds. With electronic beeps instead of speech, the effect vanished. The cats were not learning arbitrary sound-image pairs in general. They were doing it for human voices.

The authors of the 2024 paper were careful to note they only measured short term associations and did not test retention. Still, taken together the four studies describe an animal that listens to human speech attentively, maps it onto individuals and objects, and files the results without being asked. Which somewhat complicates the usual accusation of indifference, alongside the other things cats do that look like nothing and are not, such as kneading and purring.

The Dog Comparison Is Not a Fair Fight

Every time this research surfaces, someone points out that dogs do better, and technically they do. Kaminski and colleagues reported in Science in 2004 that a border collie named Rico knew over 200 object labels. Then John Pilley and Alliston Reid published work in Behavioural Processes in 2011 on Chaser, another border collie, who learned 1,022 proper nouns for individual toys and could identify a new object by elimination when given an unfamiliar name, a strategy that resembles how young children handle new words.

Two things to note before declaring a winner. First, Chaser received four to five hours of daily training for three years. Nobody has ever done that with a cat, and any researcher who tried would produce a paper about scratches. Second, dogs went through roughly 15,000 years of selective breeding for cooperation with humans, including breeds designed specifically to take verbal instruction at distance.

Cats did not go through that. As Saito put it, cats are not as social as those other species, and they interact with us when they want. She also suggested there may be a common feature in the evolutionary process of sociality between humans and cats, both of which arguably self-domesticated rather than being bred to spec. The name discrimination that cats show untrained looks like an earlier point on the same road that dogs travelled much further down under heavy human pressure.

Do Cats Know Their Names and Ignore Us Anyway?

Yes. That is the honest reading, and it has empirical support beyond the ear twitching. In October 2022, Charlotte de Mouzon and colleagues at Université Paris Nanterre published a study in Animal Cognition testing 16 indoor companion cats with recordings in two registers, cat-directed speech (the high pitched sing-song most people use on animals) and ordinary adult-directed speech, from both the owner and a stranger. The cats discriminated speech addressed to them from speech addressed to adults, and the effect was tied to their own owner’s voice rather than to the register in the abstract.

So the cat knows the sound is its name, knows the voice belongs to you, knows the sentence is aimed at it, and stays on the shelf. This is not a processing failure. It is a decision, and a slightly insulting one.

Running the test at home

You can approximate the 2019 protocol badly but usefully. Record yourself saying four ordinary words with the same number of syllables and stress pattern as your cat’s name, then the name itself. Play them from another room, roughly fifteen seconds apart, while the cat is calm and not eating. Watch the ears rather than the body. If the ears rotate on the fifth word after going still on the first four, you have a cat that made the discrimination. If your cat then does nothing at all, that is also within the published range of results, and no worse than the deliberate table swipe as evidence of what cats think of us.

The Short Answer

Do cats know their names? They can tell their own name from other words, they know your voice from a stranger’s, they track where you are by sound, they link housemates’ names to housemates’ faces, and they attach spoken sounds to images faster than infants do in comparable tests. What they do not do is answer. The gap between hearing and replying is not a limitation of the cat, it is the whole design of the animal, and 10,000 years of cohabitation has not closed it by a millimetre. Say the name anyway.
