The Golden Orb Mystery Points to a Giant Deep-Sea Anemone

The mysterious golden orb found off Alaska has finally acquired an identity. It is associated with the base of a giant deep-sea anemone. After more than two years of speculation, the ocean has effectively handed us an abandoned attachment pad.

This is an excellent outcome for science and a mildly disappointing one for anyone who had already designed the alien nursery.

What the golden orb turned out to be

NOAA announced the identification on April 22. The object, collected in the Gulf of Alaska at a depth of about 3,250 meters during a 2023 expedition, was identified as material left from the base of Relicanthus daphneae.

The underlying study was posted to bioRxiv on April 21. It is a preprint: a research paper shared before formal peer review, not a paper made peer-reviewed by appearing on that platform.

The researchers describe remnant cuticles associated with the animal. Think of material from its attachment base: something that helped connect a living creature to the seafloor, left behind to become a very disproportionate public relations event.

How you identify something that no longer looks like an animal

A photograph provided the mystery, but the specimen provided the evidence. The researchers combined examination of its structure with genetic analysis. They found spirocysts, a type of microscopic capsule associated with hexacorallians, and recovered genetic material that allowed comparisons with Relicanthus.

The study also examined a similar deep-water specimen, material from a collected animal in the Southern Ocean, and images of comparable cuticles beneath living individuals. The case did not depend solely on someone looking at the orb and deciding it had an anemone vibe.

The Smithsonian’s April explanation notes that initial DNA barcoding was inconclusive and more extensive sequencing helped resolve the identity. It also distinguishes spirocysts as non-stinging. Calling them record-breaking stinging weapons would turn an identification clue into the wrong sort of tentacle drama.

The useful lesson is how different kinds of evidence reinforce one another. Structure narrows the possibilities; genetic comparisons help test them; other specimens provide context. None of those steps is as visually arresting as a golden blob on the seafloor. Together, they are much more informative.

The missing owner is impressive too

The Smithsonian describes Relicanthus daphneae as a large deep-sea animal with pinkish or purple coloration and long tentacles, formally described in 2006. The creature is rather more elaborate than the remnant that made the headlines.

That feels unfair in a familiar way. Imagine having a spectacular wardrobe and being known internationally because someone found the adhesive mark beneath your chair.

The discovery does not tell us every detail of what happened to the particular animal that left the Alaska object. Identifying the material is not the same as reconstructing the owner’s final itinerary. “This belonged to an anemone” is a result; a detailed story about when it moved away or died needs additional evidence.

The answer is smaller than the speculation, and better

There is a special pleasure in a mystery whose explanation is both ordinary and unexpectedly strange. The orb was not a new form of alien technology. It was part of an organism whose biology still gave researchers a substantial puzzle.

That does not make the original curiosity foolish. Not recognizing something is often the beginning of a useful question. The trouble starts when a possible explanation becomes a confident headline before the evidence catches up.

We saw a smaller version of that distinction with the crows pulling material from figures at Tokyo DisneySea: what a camera shows and why an animal does it are related questions, not automatically the same answer.

For a mystery closer to the sofa, there is also why cats knead with their paws. Deep-sea creatures leave mysterious attachment pads; cats leave fur on every comfortable surface you own. At least the ocean needed a research vessel before it could complain.
