Your cat disappears through the garden and returns looking suspiciously well catered for. Where did they go? A GPS tracker promises an answer, ideally before you start interviewing the neighbours about their tuna policy.
The interesting part is that the map often shows a surprisingly local life. But choosing a tracker means understanding three different things: how it finds a position, how it sends that position to you, and whether your cat can comfortably and safely wear it.
What tracking studies reveal about outdoor cats
A 2020 international study tracked 925 pet cats across six countries. Their average home range was 3.6 hectares, with considerable variation; only three exceeded one square kilometre. That is a useful antidote to imagining every afternoon outing as an expedition across a mountain range.
A home range describes an area used during observation. It is not a daily walking distance, a boundary the animal cannot cross, or a guarantee about your particular cat.
The New Zealand Cat Tracker project followed 209 cats for a week. Recorded ranges ran from about 0.1 hectares to more than 200. Average travel was roughly five kilometres over the week, with one cat covering more than thirty. That is cumulative travel, not a cat spending the week thirty kilometres from its front door.
Population matters too. A University of Illinois study of owned and unowned cats reported an average range below two hectares for the pets, while one unowned male ranged across 547 hectares. These are different animals, circumstances and observation periods, not competing promises for the distance your cat will travel.
GPS finds a position; a network delivers the message
A GPS receiver listens to timed signals from satellites whose positions are known. In a typical three-dimensional solution, signals from at least four satellites allow the receiver to solve for its position and its clock error together. The collar does not send a request up to a satellite saying, âOne small fugitive, please.â
Accuracy depends on the receiver and its surroundings. Buildings, trees and reflected signals can make a fix less reliable; indoor reception can be poor. GPS.gov explains these limitations. A dot on a map is an estimate, not a tiny surveillance camera.
The receiver still needs a way to get that estimate to your phone. Many pet trackers use a cellular connection. Check the specific modelâs supported networks and coverage where the cat actually wanders: a GPS fix without a working data connection may not reach the app promptly. Tractiveâs coverage guidance, for example, distinguishes satellite positioning from the cellular service needed to transmit it.
GPS, Bluetooth and radio locators do different jobs
A Bluetooth item tag can be useful nearby. Products using a finding network, such as Appleâs Find My network, can also have their location relayed by compatible devices passing within range. That depends on those devices being around; it is not the same as a dedicated tracker sending frequent GPS updates over its own cellular connection.
A radio-frequency locator uses a handheld receiver to help you home in on its tag. Tabcatâs system is an example. Think âhelp me search nearby,â rather than âshow the entire afternoonâs route on a map.â Walls, terrain and distance still affect reception.
You may also encounter GPS devices using LoRaWAN. Again, that is a way to carry location data, not a substitute for obtaining a position. It needs suitable gateway coverage or your own infrastructure; availability, setup and service costs depend on the system. The LoRa Allianceâs gateway guide explains that architecture. Battery life is a trade-off, not a magic number
Frequent location updates can make a search easier, but they use more energy. Poor reception and repeated attempts to obtain or transmit a position can also affect endurance. Some trackers offer power-saving zones at home or different live-tracking modes; the details vary by model.
Read the manufacturerâs conditions behind a battery claim. Tractiveâs battery guidance lists signal conditions and usage among the factors. âUp toâ is doing a job in those specifications.

The collar matters as much as the electronics
There is no sensible universal rule that a tracker weighing five percent of a catâs body weight is automatically suitable. Device size, attachment, fit and the individual animal matter. Follow the productâs age and weight requirements, choose a lightweight setup, and ask your vet if you are unsure about suitability.
Cats Protection recommends a quick-release collar, rather than an elasticated one, if a collar is used. It should fit snugly with room for two fingers underneath; check it again after fitting and regularly thereafter. Added accessories can introduce snagging risks. Never defeat the release mechanism to stop an expensive tracker going missing.
A 2010 study of 538 cats found that 391 wore their assigned collars throughout six months. Eighteen experienced a collar catching on an object, in the mouth or around a forelimb. These were collar trials, not a test proving the safety of adding GPS hardware. The study supports taking fit and monitoring seriously, rather than assuming either that every cat rejects collars or that every collar is harmless.
A microchip remains a separate form of identification. As the AVMA explains, it is not GPS: someone needs to find and scan the animal, and the registration details need to be current. A dropped tracker points to a collar. A registered chip can help identify the cat wearing no collar at all.
Read the map with a little scepticism
Check the timestamp before treating a dot as a current location. Lines between recorded points are not necessarily the exact route taken between them. An odd jump could be a poor fix, but do not automatically dismiss an unusual position simply because it is outside the normal routine.
Likewise, a stationary tracker may mean a sleeping cat, a lost collar or stale data. The app supplies clues; you still have to interpret them. Your cat has declined to provide a written itinerary.
Small ranges also do not mean no wildlife impact. The 2020 international study estimated hunting from owner reports of prey brought home, with adjustments for unreturned prey, and found predation concentrated near homes. It did not directly witness every kill. A well-fed cat can still hunt, as anyone watching a cat chattering at birds may already suspect.
A tracker can help answer where a cat has been and assist a search. It cannot keep them out of roads, prevent a fight or protect nearby wildlife. Secure outdoor space and suitable enrichment address different needs. The best purchase is the one that fits both your cat and the actual problem you want to solveâeven if the investigation ultimately reveals a second breakfast two doors away.
